Exercising for the 35+ Age Group
56Most people in the 35+ age group have had the experience of suddenly meeting an old school friend after many years and finding them unrecognizable. Sometimes the change has been wrought by hardship, illness or suffering, but quite often it is a result of prosperity. In these strangers with their florid complexions, bald heads, gross stomachs and thick necks we seek in vain for the slim young girl or handsome youth we knew.
The sad thing is that it need not happen.
The story is usually the same. In youth they were active and fond of sport. Their appetites were good; they ate anything and everything and their stomachs digested whatever they consumed. With increasing age and prosperity, physical activity diminished, sport was given up, they drove instead of walking; but the eating went on, bigger and better than ever.
The men, the active swimmers and surfers, the footballers, athletes gradually became watchers rather than participants. They married. They dropped out of sporting circles, stayed at home with their families or took them on picnics (in the car). Some might do a little gardening; or at the beach they might dip into the water between sitting and watching the kids play; but for the most part, weekends would be spent entertaining friends with dinner parties, Sunday brunches, barbeques and a few beers on the deck. On weekdays there were business lunches to fill them up at midday, a few drinks after work; then a substantial dinner with a wine or two, followed by TV.
The women, a similar sort of story.
The conclusion is logical. Less exercise + more eating = excess weight, with all its attendant maladies. It is ironic that by the time most of us can afford to indulge in rich living our bodies cannot accept it.
Body Energy Connection advocates that the remedy lies in regular exercise and suitable diet ….. Well-balanced, health-giving meals …….. not in fads and freak diets, which are as bad as over eating. Great article! Exercising and keeping in shape is critical to a long and healthy life! It is hard to stay in shape as we age, but it really does come down to eating less and exercising more.
